The Perseid meteor shower is the most beautiful meteor shower of the year. With swift and bright meteors, Perseids frequently leave long “wakes” of light and color behind them as they streak through Earth’s atmosphere. The Perseids are one of the most plentiful showers. They occur with warm summer nighttime weather, allowing sky watchers to view them comfortably.
Today marks the beginning of the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks on the evening of Monday, August 11 through Tuesday, August 12, 2024. While you can catch a glimpse of the Perseids on any clear night from now until September, the peak night offers the best opportunity to witness this celestial spectacle.
That’s about 04:00 UTC on August 12, at midnight EDT on August 12. All in all, though, this is a pretty wide peak, so eight hours on either side of this peak will produce almost as many “shooting stars” per hour. You can start meteor-watching right after it gets dark on August 11.
The moon will be a 43%-lit waxing crescent, helping to set into the southwestern horizon just before midnight in the northern hemisphere. Thereafter, the rest of the night will be moonlight-free, which is perfect for watching a meteor shower.
If you’ve yet to plan for the Perseids in 2024, you can book Monday and Tuesday off and plan a camping trip to a dark sky and be looking up—with no distractions—for a couple of hours between 11:00 and dawn.
