Gena Rowlands, the talented and beautiful actress who starred in a series of introspective independent films, has died. She passed away on August 14, 2024. The death was confirmed by the office of Daniel Greenberg, a representative for Ms. Rowlands’s son, the director Nick Cassavetes.
Virginia Cathryn “Gena” Rowlands was an American actress whose career in film, stage, and television spanned nearly seven decades. She was born on June 19, 1930, and in June, her family informed her that she had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for five years.
Gena Rowlands’s husband is the famous filmmaker, John Cassavetes. Their collaboration was very successful in the film industry. A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Gloria (1980), Opening Night (1977), and The Notebook (2004) are some of her movies. Also, you can watch her great acting in TV series such as Peyton Place (1966), The Betty Ford Story (1987), Wild Iris (2001), and Hysterical Blindness (2002).
Rowlands was a major character in the 1968 picture Faces, which marked their first significant collaboration. The picture, an uncompromising analysis of a failing marriage, highlighted Rowlands’ fantastic ability to capture intense inner agony. However, their second film, A Woman Under the Influence (1974), cemented Rowlands’ reputation as a cinematic legend. Rowlands portrayed Mabel Longhetti, a homemaker dealing with mental illness, in the movie. She received widespread praise for the authenticity and passion of her portrayal, which led to her being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Rowlands and Cassavetes kept collaborating on movies, such as Gloria (1980) and Opening Night (1977). Rowlands received a second Oscar nod for her portrayal of a strong, streetwise mother defending a small kid from the mob in Gloria. In 2015, she received an honorary Oscar.
